Black History Month 2025
Celebrating "African Americans and Labor" at the Intersection of History and Ability
We Must Never Forget That Black History is American History
Black History Month is a time for reflection, celebration, and education. Jawonio, in both Rockland and Yonkers, honors the remarkable achievements throughout our history, and to acknowledge the ongoing struggles for equality and justice. In 2025, the national theme, “African Americans and Labor,” takes center stage, highlighting the profound impact and contributions to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of the United States.
This theme resonates deeply with the work we do at Jawonio, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities, mental health challenges and chronic medical needs. For decades, Jawonio has been a beacon of hope and empowerment, providing essential services and advocating for the rights of people with special needs. As we commemorate Black History Month, it’s crucial to recognize the intersectionality of race and disability, and to amplify the stories during Black History Month of those individuals who have navigated tremendous challenges with resilience and determination.
The history of Black Americans is inextricably linked to the history of labor in the United States. From the forced labor of enslaved Africans to the fight for fair wages and working conditions during the Civil Rights Movement, they have played a pivotal role in shaping the American workforce. Their contributions have often been overlooked or undervalued, but their impact is undeniable.
Similarly, the history of disability rights is a testament to the power of advocacy and perseverance.
Individuals with disabilities have fought tirelessly for inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities in all aspects of life, including employment. Their struggles have led to landmark legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which has opened doors for countless individuals to participate fully in the workforce.
At Jawonio, and around the country, especially today, we understand the importance of honoring the history of both the Black and Disability communities. We invite you to join us in commemorating Black History Month 2025. Let us reflect on the contributions of Black laborers, celebrate the progress made in disability rights, and recommit ourselves to creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive society for all.
