Today is a defining moment for our nation. As work authorization expires for thousands of Haitian Temporary Protected Status holders, America risks losing the very people who care for our most vulnerable neighbors. This is more than an immigration debate, it is a test of our values, our workforce, and our commitment to people with disabilities and the essential professionals who support them every day.

“If Haiti is too dangerous for routine travel, what exactly does ‘return’ mean?”

That question, raised in a recent opinion piece in The New Humanitarian, goes beyond the debate over Temporary Protected Status (TPS). It challenges us to confront a deeper question about who we are as a nation. What does it say about America when people who have worked, paid taxes, cared for our most vulnerable neighbors, and strengthened our communities are told they no longer belong?

For Jawonio, that question is not theoretical.

Today, Monday, July 27, 22 members of our essential workforce face the loss of their authorization to work in the United States. A temporary extension beyond last Friday has offered only a brief reprieve, not a solution. These dedicated professionals are not losing their ability to work because they failed to perform or because their services are no longer needed. They remain at risk because of a policy decision that threatens an already fragile human services workforce.

And the most vulnerable people we support day and night will feel the impact.

Our Jawonio mission is to advance independence, well-being, and equality for people with disabilities and special needs. Our essential staff make that mission possible every day by providing the support, stability, and trusted relationships that allow people to live, work, and play meaningfully throughout their communities.

For the people we support, these staff members are not simply employees, they are trusted Jawonio family who understand their needs, routines, dreams, and goals. Losing 22 experienced professionals is not just a workforce challenge; it is a human services crisis.

The discussion around TPS is often framed solely as an immigration issue, but it is also a disability rights issue, a healthcare workforce issue, an economic issue, and ultimately a question about America’s values.

Haiti continues to face extraordinary violence, instability, and the collapse of essential infrastructure. The U.S. State Department continues to warn Americans against travel because of kidnappings, armed violence, and civil unrest. Return requires more than a plane landing. It requires safety, opportunity, and the ability to rebuild a life with dignity.

That reality matters to Haitian TPS holders who have spent years building lives here, raising families, paying taxes, and serving their communities. It also matters to organizations like Jawonio where experienced, compassionate professionals are increasingly difficult to replace.

Across New York, disability service providers are struggling to recruit and retain qualified direct support professionals while demand for services continues to grow. Removing experienced caregivers from this workforce will not only affect providers it will disrupt the lives of people with disabilities, older adults, families, and communities that depend on them every day.

This moment calls for leadership, compassion, and creativity, not another temporary extension.

America has always been at its best when it creates opportunity, rewards hard work and recognizes the contributions of those who strengthen our communities. We need bipartisan solutions that provide permanent legal pathways for long-term TPS holders who have demonstrated their commitment to this country through years of work, service, and community involvement. At a minimum, Congress and the Administration should extend these protections through 2029 while pursuing meaningful immigration reform that reflects both our workforce needs and our nation’s highest ideals.

This does not have to be the day America turns its back on essential caregivers. Instead, let it be the day our leaders choose courage over complacency, bipartisan solutions over political division, and permanent pathways that allow dedicated workers to continue strengthening the communities they proudly call home.

When we lose essential staff, we do not simply lose employees. We lose experience, trust, relationships, and members of our community. Most importantly, we risk disrupting the lives of people with disabilities who deserve consistency, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
