Life Skills & Independence
Participants work on skills that support greater independence in everyday life. Programs focus on prevocational and work-readiness skills, daily living skills, socialization, money management, communication, teamwork, confidence-building, and critical advocacy engagement.
For families, even small milestones can mean everything: “My son has been at Jawonio since 2021. He came in not knowing the date or the year. Today, when he comes home, he’ll tell me what day it is. That might not seem like much to the regular person, but to me, it’s everything.” – Jawonio Yonkers Parent
Community Connections
Through community-based activities and the Without Walls program, participants have opportunities to explore new places, build friendships, and take part in meaningful experiences.
Jawonio Westchester staff encourage and value giving back. Participants enjoy supporting the needs of their Yonkers neighbors helping with the site-based community food pantry.
Teamwork is learned and encouraged as everyone makes a positive difference in people’s lives.
Family Engagement
Jawonio began as a family-built organization almost 80 years ago and continues to ensure families are part of their loved ones progress and program experience every day. Our Parent Engagement Days bring families together, as part of the program experience. Families will meet with the team, learn more about available services, and connect with other parents who understand their journey.
These moments of connection help families build relationships, share resources, and feel supported as part of the Jawonio community.
