"A stronger America is one where every person has the opportunity to contribute, every family has access to the supports they need, and every community values the dignity and potential of all its members."

America at 250: Does the Promise of America Reach Everyone?
America at 250 isn’t just about celebrating our past. It’s about asking whether the promise of America reaches everyone.
As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, we celebrate the ideals that have shaped the United States—life, liberty, equality, opportunity, and the pursuit of happiness. We honor those who have fought to expand those ideals and recognize that each generation is called upon to strengthen them for the next.
At Jawonio, that work has been our mission for nearly 80 years.
Since 1947, we have believed that every person—regardless of ability—deserves the opportunity to learn, work, live independently, and fully participate in community life. We believe that inclusion is not simply a service model; it is an expression of our nation’s highest ideals.
This year, as America celebrates its semiquincentennial, recent national developments remind us that the promise of freedom and opportunity cannot be taken for granted.
The Supreme Court’s recent 6–3 decision allowing the federal government to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for many Haitian nationals while legal challenges continue has created uncertainty for thousands of dedicated workers who care for our nation’s most vulnerable people. Across New York and at Jawonio, many of these individuals are direct support professionals in both residential and day services, and caregivers whose compassion and commitment make community living possible.
As our CEO, Randi Narvesen Rios-Castro, recently shared:
“The loss of these essential workers will deepen staffing shortages not only in disability services, but across the entire healthcare sector.”
At the same time, the Department of Justice’s recent memorandum concerning the interpretation of the Olmstead decision has raised concerns throughout the disability community about the future enforcement of one of our nation’s most important civil rights protections. While Olmstead remains the law of the land, disability advocates recognize that protecting the right of people with disabilities to live, work, and thrive in their communities requires ongoing vigilance.
These issues are connected by a simple truth:
A stronger America is one where every person has the opportunity to contribute, every family has access to the supports they need, and every community values the dignity and potential of all its members.
That is what we witness every day at Jawonio.
We see it in children taking their first steps toward lifelong learning.
We see it in adults earning a paycheck and discovering new confidence through meaningful employment.
We see it in people living independently with the supports they choose.
We see it in the extraordinary dedication of direct support professionals, teachers, therapists, clinicians, nurses, job coaches, and caregivers who make those opportunities possible.
These are not just Jawonio success stories.
They are American success stories.
As we celebrate America250, let us remember that our nation’s strength has always come from expanding opportunity, embracing diversity, and building communities where everyone belongs.
The work of creating “a more perfect Union” did not end in 1776.
It continues today—in classrooms, workplaces, neighborhoods, healthcare settings, and communities like ours.
At Jawonio, we are proud to be part of that work.
For nearly 80 years, we have believed that independence, inclusion, and belonging are not privileges reserved for some—they are opportunities that should be available to everyone.
As America begins its next 250 years, may we continue building a nation where every individual is valued, every contribution matters, and every person has the opportunity to thrive.
Because the promise of America is fulfilled only when it reaches everyone.
