(New City, NY) May 21, 2014 – Jawonio, Inc., the premiere provider of lifespan services in New York for individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral health challenges, and chronic medical conditions, announced today the growth of its iPad Program at its Katzen Early Childhood Education Center.
In 2010, Jawonio received a $118,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support education services for the children and families in our program. Recognizing the need for increased opportunities to help children develop communication, cognitive and social skills, Jawonio included funding in this grant for the purchase of 10 iPads. At that time, the use of iPads and apps in early childhood and special education was fairly new, and Jawonio was a regional leader in implementing this important technology. In addition to developing a successful program that integrates iPad technology into the classroom and therapy sessions, Jawonio staff also presented workshops throughout the agency and region on how to replicate this program with children and adults with special needs. Another grant from the Forever Jordan Foundation in 2012 allowed Jawonio to purchase an additional 5 iPads and $500 worth of apps for use in the classrooms.
Four years later, the iPad program at the Katzen Early Childhood Education Center continues to grow. This year, through the generosity of the Seventh District Masons Foundation, Jawonio received 15 additional iPads for classroom use. In addition, iPads are utilized in our adult day and residential programs. This technology allows people of all ages to communicate with others, learn new skills and be more independent in their programs and community. As a leader in providing services for people with developmental disabilities and special needs, Jawonio continually strives to incorporate cutting edge technology that will enhance the lives of the people we serve.

Children with social and/or cognitive delays benefit from the various apps that reinforce skills in these areas. The iPad is an effective tool that teachers, therapists and parents can utilize to enhance the learning experience for children.”
