“For me, coming to Jawonio, I knew for sure, I was supposed to be here. I love the feeling of helping others every day. "
Where did you grow up and go to school?
I grew up in Port-Au-Prince in Haiti with 5 brothers and a sister. I went to high school in Haiti. I moved to the US in 2003. Our dad brought us to Miami first and then I came up here to Rockland County to be with my sister who I missed very much.
Where did you work prior to Jawonio?
Before Jawonio, I worked with teens for an agency in Monsey. After a few years, I wanted to take that experience and work with adults. I was working two jobs at the time and found Jawonio. I interviewed for a position as DSP in our group homes and here I am.
What were your first impressions of Jawonio?
All of the people I met were so welcoming and nice. During those first interviews, I felt very comfortable and could be myself. I remember during conversations with Sara Trowers, we actually laughed together and she made me feel like I would do well here. Four years later, I am doing well and I am good at my job!
What is the importance of team communications in this challenging profession?
Since we are in a caring and helping profession, we too as staff also need help and support in our work. As a team, I always feel we can always ask our Supervisors for help. This is a very important part of our work to know that they are always open and they listen. This work is very challenging, and I always tell my co-workers, it is how you approach the problem or the situation. If you treat people with respect, you will get that back. I come to work every day knowing I will do the best I can to help the individuals in whatever way they need me. But, I also tell my co-workers that if they need help, I am here for them too and that’s how we work together as a team.
What makes Jawonio such a special place for you?
What makes Jawonio so special is that first it is a great place to work, but also as important, is to come to work prepared in your job. When I say prepared, I mean if you bring an open heart and a passion for the work, you will love it. I come to work everyday knowing that I am helping someone who needs me.
You can’t come to work at Jawonio without the love.
We have gotten to know your passion for work, so tell us what you like to do at home?
I love to spend time with my daughters, ages 11 and 9. We enjoy spending time at the mall because they love shopping of course! I am a big action movie fan, and I love to watch when I am home. I don’t let the girls watch yet, which is why I like parental controls our TV.
Finally, what does the future look like for you at Jawonio?
For my future, I will continue to take the classes and training Jawonio offers to be promoted. Jawonio encourages us all to go higher in our careers and that is very important to me. I love it here and I see myself here for many years.
If you had to describe Jawonio in one word:
FAMILY!
