A Message from Randi Rios-Castro
Happy April to our Jawonio community, and welcome to Spring. As we embrace the season and the close of the first quarter, a time of renewal, reflection, and new beginnings—we are reminded of the many moments that connect and inspire us, including the meaningful holidays many in our community recently celebrated—Easter, Passover, and Ramadan. These moments of tradition and togetherness reflect the strength and diversity that define Jawonio.
This month, we proudly recognize Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, highlighted by a wonderful interview with a preschool family. We also continue to reflect on the incredible success of Rally in the Valley in March—a powerful testament to the strength, voice, and unity of our community.
The Rally in the Valley at RCC was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when staff, the people we support, and our broader community come together. More than 3,000 advocates raised their voices, sending a strong message to our elected officials about the importance of programs and services for the people we support. We extend our sincere thanks to President Mullaney and his staff for allowing us to host this incredible event at the college and helping make it a success.
Advocacy is at the heart of everything we do. Every day, our work shapes opportunities, strengthens services, and ensures the voices of the people we support are heard. While the NYS Senate and Assembly continue to negotiate with the Governor and we still await the NYS budget passage, the conversations we’
Equally inspiring is the work of our staff in both Rockland and Westchester. Each interaction, each moment of inspiration, and each act of compassion builds a stronger, more supportive environment where people feel valued and empowered. Whether you are providing direct support, planning programs, or ensuring operations run smoothly, your contributions create lasting change and show the true power of a united community.
Thank you for your dedication, advocacy, and heart. Together, we are shaping a future where our community can thrive, where people’s voices are heard, and where so much good truly happens. Let’s carry the momentum of Rally in the Valley forward throughout the year, and continue to make a difference, every day.
We have an exciting year ahead at Jawonio! We’re proud to introduce our new 6-week C.R.E.W. (Community Resources, Education & Wellness) classes for adults 18+, featuring art, yoga, and no-cook cooking experiences beginning May 4th. We’re also moving forward with plans for our new PROS building in Valley Cottage and beginning early planning for BrickApalooza, a fun-filled family day celebrating our Brick It Again store.
Be sure to watch for upcoming save-the-dates, and we hope you’ll join us in the ways that matter most to you—through advocacy, events, or my Family Town Hall calls. We look forward to connecting with you all year long.
With Gratitude,
