A Message from Randi Rios-Castro, CEO
Randi Rios-Castro, CEO
The summer season has brought some wonderful memories for our staff that included food, fun and festivities. Through our “Chat and Chew” committee, we helped to bring food and ice cream trucks for the enjoyment of our staff. Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee organized an international food festival in the main campus café which was a huge success. Thank you to all of our staff who helped to organize these events for sustaining the Jawonio culture of caring and joy.
The Summer Education Program is a time we look forward to all year. Hearing the laughter and seeing the connection between staff and our students each day is a constant reminder that so much good happens here. Over the years, thousands of children have had unforgettable experiences including making life-long friends, learning new skills, keeping up with their academics and therapies, and most importantly, having fun!!

While the program name transitioned from “Camp Jawonio” in the 1940’s to the Summer Education Program in recent decades, what hasn’t changed is the passion and commitment of staff who join us for these magical six weeks. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to meet two former counselors, Ken Smith and Bob Smith who worked at Jawonio in 1966 and 1967. They shared their memories and during their visit, sang the original Camp Jawonio song. With tears in their eyes, they remembered every single word – even though they had not sung it for 57 years! Their memories of Jawonio have stayed with them since their first summer. Ken shared, during his visit, that Jawonio impacted his entire career. He told us that during his new manager meetings as a C-Suite Executive at Hilton International, he instilled the importance of volunteerism and charitable engagement as part of their work. He said that his leadership during his entire professional career was always influenced by Jawonio. This unforgettable visit truly shows the lifelong impact Jawonio has on the lives of our past, present, and future staff. It is but one amazing example of the “miracle of Jawonio” and makes me so proud to be part of Jawonio every day.
I want to take a moment to thank our 2024 Summer Education Program staff. To our educators, clinicians, one-to-one staff, nurses, music therapists and art teachers, thank you for keeping our students safe, healthy and happy as you inspired them to learn through play, music, art and swim over the past 6 weeks. Thank you to our parents and families who gave entrusted us with your beautiful children and teens. I also want to express my gratitude to our maintenance department and Jawonio Cleaning Company for ensuring a healthy and safe environment for our children.
Our ability to inspire our children and adults to reach their highest potential depends on the generosity and ongoing support of our Jawonio community. How can you help? You can sign up to become a monthly sustainer below or visit our website to find out the many ways you can make a difference!
