Build a career in a supportive culture of caring

“Employee Spotlight” with Ilene Goldberg

"What I love most about being an OT, is that I love working with people including my colleagues, our children and their families."

What is your educational background?

I received my BA at SUNY Binghamton, my MBA at IONA college
and my BS/MS degree at Mercy College.

What was your first clinical experience and first jobs?

My first clinical experiences were in a hospital, a hand therapy clinic, and a nursing home. Also, I observed the Jawonio preschool before I completed my OT education.

How did you begin your career at Jawonio?

My OT thesis partner was working at the Jawonio preschool and informed me about a position available.

How long have you been with Jawonio and what do you love the most about being an occupational therapist at Jawonio?

I will be at Jawonio for 26 years in September. I began my career at Jawonio as a staff Occupational Therapist. Following that first position, I was promoted to Occupational Coordinator and then moved up to my current position as Supervisor of Occupational Therapy Services. What I love most about being an OT, is that I love working with people including my colleagues, our children and their families.

What would you share with students who are considering a career in OT about building a career at Jawonio?

Jawonio is a great place to work and build a career. I am always learning, and for a new OT, there will always be something for you to learn as well.

Ilene Goldberg, MS

What makes the Jawonio culture so special?

As employees we are a family that is working toward a common goal to achieve independence for each individual we support. It is a great personal feeling to help people to do life skills such as speaking, walking, eating, and writing.

What do you like to do with your free time?

I enjoy going out for lunch or dinner, going to the movies, going to the beach, watching television, speaking on the telephone, and going to baseball games. (I am a huge fan of the Yankees).

What are some things people don’t know about you?

Well, I love eating potato chips and I enjoy watching General Hospital and discussing with my co-workers who are fans as well.
